A Different Outcome hosts first-ever Career Day for at-risk youth in New York

(Albany, NY, Monday, August 29, 2022) – A Different Outcome (ADO), a 501(c)3 charitable organization providing mentoring and training to at-risk Black boys and young adults, recently hosted its first annual Career Day for students enrolled in the program in Albany, NY.

The all-day event at The Edison Club in Rexford, NY, brought in half a dozen participating boys along with ADO founders, tutors, volunteers, and supporters for sessions on careers in the golf industry, from the pro shop to groundskeeping. The morning started with a presentation from the course general manager on the business of golf, covering operations, concessions, the pro shop, member services, hospitality, and training, followed by a visit to the mechanical shop with the head groundskeeper to discuss course maintenance. The boys went out onto a green and fairway to examine the grasses and pin placement and learn how the “flow of play” is regulated to keep the course in top shape.
The ADO students then had lunch at the Club with anchor donors Barry and Karen Hamerling, who confirmed their continuing commitment to A Different Outcome for the 2022-2023 school year.
The mid-afternoon included a discussion of what it takes to become a career employee in the golf business, along with snapshots of various long-term career options at a course. After that, it was time for a quick lesson on the putting green from the head pro and an hour in the club swimming pool. None of the boys, said charity co-founder and president Kevin Green, Jr., had ever been to a golf course.
ADO mentor and lead tutor Freddy Woods said, “The boys had a great time. They were very attentive during the informational sessions about the vast job opportunities in the world of golf. The boys learned the importance of furthering their education in order to be successful with the different job opportunities that the golf industry has to offer. This is important because it coincides with ADO’s message about the importance of education and using education as a tool to be successful in life.”
Morgan Austin, ADO executive director and chief outreach officer, added, “The students of ADO had such an amazing time with the golfing. It opened their eyes to new possibilities in careers or to fall in love with golf themselves. Taking them to a new environment and showing them different opportunities is something they will never forget.”
A Different Outcome seeks to motivate and inspire young men by providing appropriate curriculum- based mentoring and training,” says co-founder and lead director Kevin Green, Sr. “Our goal is to inspire and support some of the most at-risk, marginalized, and misunderstood individuals in American society.”
Participants in the ADO program must maintain regular school attendance and demonstrate improved awareness and knowledge in key focus areas including mental and emotional wellness, technology, and financial literacy. Each student must show that his actions reflect ADO’s core values of self-discipline, reliability, honesty, and hard work.
“We launched A Different Outcome a few years ago,” says Green, Jr. “As the pandemic seems to ebb, it’s clear that we now can accelerate our schedule and get more kids into the program. We built ADO to thrive in a virtual environment, but we easily can ‘go live’ as things normalize. With our board and strong support system, we believe that we have the key expertise and leadership needed to have influence in the lives of at-risk youth in our communities, but we can always use more help!”
