A Different Outcome partners with Albany Medical College to host medical careers visit

(Albany, NY, Monday, November 27, 2023) – A Different Outcome (ADO, https://differentoutcome.org), a 501(c)3 charitable organization providing mentoring and training to at-risk school-age Black boys and young adults, recently staged a learning/careers visit for students enrolled in the program at the Albany Medical College’s Patient Safety and Clinical Competence Center.

Hosted by Albany Medical College Executive Director of Standardized Patient Education Heather Frenz and several AMC staffers, nurses, and physicians, the event at the College brought in ten participating boys along with ADO founders, tutors, and volunteers for hands-on demonstrations of patient counseling, CPR, medical and training equipment, and emergency room procedures.
“What we did with the ADO group was a patient simulation,” explained Frenz. “They met with what we call a standardized patient, they interviewed him, and then the boys encouraged him to go to the emergency department. Once there, we worked with a mannequin in our mock emergency department” to teach CPR skills, listen to heart and lung sounds, demonstrate emergency room equipment, and show the group how various doctors, nurses, and aides work together to provide patient care.
“We met some doctors and nurses and performed some emergency room tasks, and we got to show the boys some options for careers within a hospital setting,” charity co-founder and president Kevin Green, Jr., said. “We saw possibilities for careers beyond doctors and nurses, from support staff to the kitchen, just a ton of opportunities. It takes a lot of specialized and dedicated workers to run a hospital and it’s eye-opening for our students to see this all of this in action.”
ADO co-founder and executive board chairman Kevin Green, Sr., added, “Not all of us are going to be musicians or sports stars; it’s important to show the boys that there are great jobs and careers out there that benefit the community and provide a really good living.”
“The boys asked really great questions and sometimes I think we forget just how smart these kids are,” said emergency medicine physician assistant Pamela Young. “They asked patient history questions, in some cases the same questions we would ask an incoming patient. And it’s always fun when kids are thoughtful and interested.”
“We bring a lot of groups through but what I find as a highlight with A Different Outcome is that these kids are so engaged, they are curious, excited, willing to learn, and appreciative,” said Frenz. “I am proud to be partnering with A Different Outcome and I hope that we can make this an annual event where we let these kids know that there is a place for them in the medical profession.”
A Different Outcome seeks to motivate and inspire boys and young men by providing appropriate curriculum-based mentoring and training. The organization’s goal is to inspire and support some of the most at-risk, marginalized, and misunderstood individuals in American society. Participants in the ADO program must maintain regular school attendance and demonstrate improved awareness and knowledge in key focus areas including mental and emotional wellness, technology, and financial literacy. Each student must show that his actions reflect ADO’s core values of self-discipline, reliability, honesty, and hard work.
“We launched A Different Outcome a few years ago to support this critical mission,” says Green, Jr. “With our board and strong support system, we believe that we have the key expertise and leadership needed to have influence in the lives of at-risk youth in our communities, but we can always use more help!”
